A Chinese "Toe-Skin" Jade Scholar'sA Chinese "Toe-Skin" Jade Scholar's Mountain Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) relief carved to the front side with figures in a landscape set with a boat bridge waterfall mountains trees and pavilions the stone of grayish-celadon tone with a russet skin and even patina height 5 1/4 in. width 7 1/2 in. set on a carved wood stand overall height 6 1/8 in. Provenance: Baltimore Antiques Fair Baltimore MD; acquired 1997. Note: Jade mountains were created as objects of contemplation reflecting man's love of nature and his insignificance within the cosmos. The intrinsic qualities of this mountain are particularly interesting given the suggestion of extrinsic influence. The foreground is set with a scholar and his attendant standing on the bow of a boat. The scholar grasps his long beard in one hand and with the other points to something to his distant right well beyond his physical setting. In the center an arched bridge emerges from behind pine boughs on it stand two scholars gazing thoughtfully forward beyond the confines of the carving. The composition subtly suggests great depth.
